Text Message Scam.
CERT Vanuatu and the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) provides the following advisory.
CERT Vanuatu (CERTVU) office has received reports from Digicel Limited in regarding the above-mentioned attacks on its constituents using Digicel Mobile Network. Therefore, CERTVU is putting out this advisory for all it’s constituents using Digicel Network who could become victims to this attack.
What is it?
The text message scams are the new way of making the most victims in the digital world.
Most of them target people willing to click on a link, which leads to phishing, identity theft, or suspicious forms that steal your private data.
How does the Text Message Scam work?
With this particular Scam, mobile phone users get a Scam Text Message pretending to be from the Mobile Operator (Digicel Limited) to advise that the Mobile Phone owner has won a price and will call a given number to claim the price. In doing so User gets charged for the calls made but does not receive any price.
Mitigation Process
If you receive a scam Text Message on your phone advising you to click on a link to win your price or call a certain number to claim your price, do the following;
- Do not follow the instructions
- Do not click on the link if provided
- Simply delete the Text Message
Digicel Limited as the mobile operator concerned has a send text message to all it’s Mobile phone Subscribers to advise of the scam.
